Washing a ski jacket in a washing machine

Washing a ski jacket in a washing machineSki suits have long ceased to be worn only by athletes. Now many people choose the “ski” as everyday winter clothing, appreciating its lightness, warmth and ability to “breathe”. True, the special kit requires special care. In order not to deteriorate the properties of membrane fabrics, it is necessary to figure out whether it is possible to wash a ski jacket in a washing machine, how and with what. Let's tell you everything in order.

Rules for caring for membrane outerwear

Let's start with the most important thing - you can wash your ski suit either by hand or in a washing machine. But it’s better not to partake and clean as rarely as possible. Ideally, it is not recommended to clean your ski more than 1-2 times in one season.

Regular washing of membrane products is contraindicated. If the ski jacket has been worn carefully and there are no strong stains on it, then it is enough to treat the front side of the down jacket with a wet rag. But it is not always possible to avoid cleaning, especially when the weather conditions were not favorable and extreme sports were practiced. Then you will have to turn to the washing machine.

Before you start washing, it’s worth considering a few recommendations from experts:

  • study the label - the manufacturer indicates optimal conditions and restrictions on it;
  • if you cannot meet all the required conditions, it is better to take the jacket to the dry cleaner;
  • You can wash it in a machine, but only on the “Synthetic”, “Wool”, “Delicate” and “Hand Wash” modes;choose delicate wash
  • intensive spinning is prohibited, ideally it is turned off completely;
  • drying of the membrane is carried out under natural conditions, in a ventilated room or in the fresh air, the main thing is to limit ultraviolet radiation and not place heating devices nearby;
  • for washing, special gels for membrane fabric are used, without chlorine and aggressive components in the composition;
  • additional rinsing will help completely rinse the detergent from the membrane and protect the fabric from soap stains and damage;
  • the down jacket must dry completely, as the damp filling will crumple and lose its heat-retaining properties.

The ski suit can be washed in a washing machine, but only on delicate programs and with minimal spin.

Special impregnations will allow you to reduce the number and intensity of washing. After applying such products to the front side, a thin protective film is created on the fabric, repelling water and dirt from the surface of the product. Then you can limit yourself to wet cleaning and quick drying.

Features of automatic washing

It's easier to wash your ski jacket in the washing machine. But in order for the item to withstand rotation in the drum, it is worth preparing the down jacket for the procedure and correctly setting the cycle parameters. We adhere to the following instructions:

  • clean the pockets, unfasten the edges and decor;
  • Pre-wash heavy stains using diluted detergent and a brush;
  • turn the jacket inside out, fastening all the buttons and zippers;
  • we place the item in a special protective bag;
  • load the jacket into the drum;
  • add detergent, gel or gel capsule;
  • select the appropriate washing program (if the machine has a “Membrane” or “Down Jacket” button, then press it);
  • reduce the temperature to 30-40 degrees;set it to 30 degrees
  • turn off spin.

There is no need to keep the jacket in the drum for a long time.Upon completion of the cycle, immediately take out the item, wring it out a little and move on to further drying. You can wash your ski by hand. This will take more time and effort, but will allow you to fully control the washing process and protect the fabric from damage. We proceed like this:

  • pour water at room temperature into a basin;
  • dissolve detergent in water (alkaline gels are prohibited, it is better to use simple laundry soap);
  • soak the jacket in soapy water for 25 minutes;
  • wash the item, gently cleaning the contaminated areas.

You cannot wring out membrane jackets!

Afterwards, all that remains is to rinse the ski jacket, changing the water until it becomes completely clear. There is no need to wring out the down jacket - just hang the product over the bathtub and let the liquid gradually leave the fibers. Next we move on to the next stage of drying.

Is it difficult to dry?

The ski suit must not only be washed properly, but also dried. Drying in unsuitable conditions will lead to unpleasant consequences: the product will become deformed and lose its original color, the filling will become crumpled, and the membrane will lose its protective properties. It’s better not to take risks and follow the instructions.

  1. After washing, slightly wring out the item without twisting it.
  2. Wrap the jacket in a dry terry towel to absorb some of the moisture.
  3. Lay the down jacket on a surface or hang it on hangers in a ventilated area away from direct ultraviolet radiation and heating devices.how to dry a membrane jacket

Heaters and hair dryers cannot be used - the membrane does not like high temperatures. As for ironing, it is not necessary: synthetics straighten themselves as they dry. If strong creases occur, iron the fabric through a towel.

It is advisable to treat the dried jacket with a special impregnation to increase the protective functions of the membrane. Then water will definitely not penetrate through the fabric, and all the dirt that gets on the down jacket will be easily washed off with a cloth. If the product has been worn for more than two years, then treatment is required.

It is advisable to treat the membrane with impregnation!

The impregnation is used strictly according to the instructions. Some compositions just need to be sprayed onto the fabric, others need to be diluted in water and the product soaked in the solution for a while. It is important to choose the product wisely, screening out analogues for tents and awnings.
