How to wash a holofiber jacket in an automatic washing machine?
Surely everyone has a down jacket or a holofiber jacket. This is a modern filler and insulation, characterized by high strength, environmental friendliness, and durability. That is why outerwear based on it is so popular. But there comes a time when a wardrobe item needs to be washed. Let's figure out how to do this correctly, and whether it is possible to use an automatic washing machine.
Basic Rules
To ensure that your favorite down jacket does not lose its shape or lose its heat-saving properties, you need to properly care for the product. But how to properly wash a holofiber jacket? In fact, one of the advantages of this synthetic filler is its unpretentiousness. Therefore, products based on it can be loaded into a washing machine.
Holofiber-based outerwear can be washed in an automatic machine.
It is very important to choose the right washing program, and there are some nuances here. Hollow fiber does not absorb moisture well, so you should choose a mode that includes soaking. If it is heavily soiled, it is better to wash a jacket based on this filler as follows:
pour warm water into a basin, dissolve detergent in it (powder or special gel for cleaning delicate fabrics);
soak the product in soapy water for about half an hour;
Using a soft-bristled brush, go over the sleeves, collar area, pockets and other most contaminated areas. If necessary, these areas can be additionally treated with laundry soap;
lightly wring out the item and load it into the washing drum;
set the delicate mode, set the “Additional rinse” option, select a spin speed of 800-1000 rpm, start the cycle;
wait until the wash is finished;
Take the jacket out of the machine and shake it, this will help straighten out the filling.
To prevent the insulation from “clumping” into clumps, it is better to put laundry balls in the washing machine along with the down jacket. If special polyvinyl chloride balls are not at hand, you can put several simple tennis balls in the drum.

Although the filler is not afraid of hot water, you should not start the mode with such a temperature in a hurry. First, you need to study the label to understand what material the “top” of the jacket is made of. In the manufacture of outerwear, raincoat fabric, bologna, membrane fabrics, and polyester are used, and they have their own limitations and care recommendations. Therefore, before loading into the drum, carefully study the product label; all requirements for cleaning and drying are indicated there.
Polyester and raincoat jackets
Let’s try to figure out what washing parameters are suitable for holofiber outerwear made from different fabrics. So, polyester jackets are completely unpretentious. They are not prone to loss of shape, color, shine, dry quickly and are quite resistant to dirt. However, the heating temperature of the water when washing such items should not exceed 40°C.
Polyester items should be washed using gel formulations for delicate fabrics. The use of any bleaches is strictly prohibited; stains and stains will remain on the material.
Raincoat jackets do not allow moisture to pass through and have excellent breathability.The products retain heat well and do not lose shape or color even after repeated washing. The water temperature when cleaning such outerwear should not exceed 45°C.
When washing raincoat fabric, do not use an intense spin cycle. This threatens the formation of creases in the material, which are quite difficult to straighten. It is also strictly prohibited to use bleach and other aggressive household chemicals.
"Membrane" and bologna
Outerwear made from membrane fabrics is moisture resistant and breathes well. The outer side of the material is treated with a silicone or Teflon-based impregnation designed to repel water. The main task when washing such jackets is not to damage this water-repellent layer. Therefore, the item should be washed on a delicate cycle, which heats the water to no more than 40°C. Running the drying and spinning program is prohibited.
When it comes to detergents, it is recommended to use liquid powders for membrane fabrics. They easily cope with dirt without damaging the product. Abrasive mixtures can clog the pores of the material.
Bolognese jackets made from holofiber cannot be washed in an automatic washing machine.
And the point is not in the filler, but in the bologna. This fabric is very sensitive to any impact, so only gentle hand washing is suitable for it. Twisting the material is also prohibited; this will inevitably lead to the formation of creases. It is recommended to squeeze the product slightly with your hands and hang it over a container to allow the water to drain. Bolognese down jackets should be dried on a hanger, flattened.
Dry and iron
It is better to dry a washed jacket on holofiber on hangers or, as standard, on a clothesline. Placing outer clothing on a radiator or heater is strictly prohibited.This can irrevocably ruin your favorite wardrobe item.
The room where outerwear is dried must be ventilated. Otherwise, the jacket may start to smell unpleasant. To remove the musty “aroma”, you will have to wash the product again. It is advisable to dry things made from a holofiber-based membrane by laying them horizontally on a special clothes dryer. This measure will prevent deformation of the jacket.
If after washing the down jacket looks too wrinkled, you can gently steam it with an iron. The heating temperature of the iron sole will depend on the fabric from which the product is made.
The filler is crumpled
Although holofiber is a fairly wear-resistant material, after repeated washings it can still begin to clump and lose shape. You can maintain the original appearance of the item if you follow a simple recommendation every time you “scroll” in the washing machine. You should place 6-8 special balls into the drum at the same time as the jacket (tennis balls are also suitable). They will fluff up the insulation and give it volume. Unfortunately, this method is not suitable for down jackets with a thick layer of filler.
If the item has completely lost its appearance, and you have no desire to part with your favorite jacket, you can do the following. Take thin scissors and carefully rip the seams to separate the lining from the top layer of the down jacket. Afterwards, you need to take out the holofiber and fluff it by hand or comb it with a brush. Then the insulation is placed back, the seams are sewn using a sewing machine.
If, after taking out the filler, it turns out that it has completely lost its shape and cannot be restored, you can buy new holofiber in handicraft stores.
