How to check the motor of an LG washing machine?

Washing machine motors are either commutator or inverter. In the second case, the engine efficiency increases significantly, and it also becomes possible to more accurately regulate its operation and the required number of revolutions. At first glance, it seems that checking the motor of an LG washing machine is very simple, but in the case of an inverter motor you will have to tinker a little, especially if there really is a problem.

How does such a motor work?

By the way, machines with direct drive (a motor without brushes, a pulley and a belt) are currently produced only by the LG and Samsung brands. So, in order to diagnose the motor, you need to understand in detail how it is designed and on what principle it works. Otherwise, you risk making a mistake, virtually blindly, due to a lack of understanding of your own actions.

The electric motor of the LG washing machine consists of the following elements:

• stator is the stationary part. It is assembled on 36 coils connected by star-shaped windings. The coils themselves are wound around the cores. This entire structure is soldered into a polymer fiber, which is attached directly to the bottom of the machine body;
• The rotor is a moving part, which is a steel bowl with 12 magnets located around its perimeter. The rotor itself is attached to the drum using a cylindrical plastic element and special spokes. Plastic protects the drum shaft from magnetization;
• Hall Sensor. This device controls the position of the moving part relative to the stator coils.

The entire operation of the electric motor is controlled by special power switches assembled on transistors.They open, close or partially unlock, which affects the process. The function of power switches is to change the direction of current on the coils and the value of the magnetic flux inside. The keys themselves are controlled by the inverter using the pulsating method of turning the device on and off.

Important! Thus, the direct drive motor is directly “connected” to the machine without the help of any additional devices such as a drive belt or the like.

Check progress

It is difficult to independently inspect such a motor, but in LG cars you can trust the automatic diagnostic system. If the engine is faulty, the corresponding error code will appear on the display, and the user will know for sure why the unit is not working. To inspect the motor in person, it is better to contact a specialist, but you can do it yourself.

• Disconnect SM from all communications.
• Unscrew the bolts around the perimeter of the back cover and remove it.
• Remove the bolts holding the wiring under the rotor.
• Take a 16mm screwdriver and remove the center screw holding the rotor in place. Be sure to hold the bowl itself so that it does not spin.
• Remove the rotor assembly and then the stator assembly by removing the 6 bolts with a 10mm screwdriver.
• Remove the wiring attached to the stator.

Now you can take a multimeter and check the sensor, windings and control circuit for short circuits. If something burns out, buy a new element and replace it with the old one.
