How to remove rust from a washing machine drum

Some unscrupulous manufacturers of washing machines make drums for appliances not from stainless steel with a high content of nickel and chromium, but from cheaper alloys. With constant contact with water, corrosion occurs - rust forms on the drum of the washing machine. If measures are not taken in time, the walls of the metal container will be “riddled” with holes, the equipment will require serious and expensive repairs, and in severe cases, the purchase of a new “home assistant”. Is it even possible to clean rust?

The question of what to do with rust is relevant in the initial stages of its appearance, because in a situation where the metal falls off from the drum in pieces, cleaning will no longer help. In this case, a complete replacement of the part with a new one is required, which involves opening the tank. In some models it is impossible to do this at all: the tank is soldered entirely, and if it is cut to replace the drum, it will be difficult to restore its previous complete integrity. In such a situation, it is recommended to change the entire tank-drum assembly, and this is a serious expense.

If rust has just appeared, it must be removed as quickly as possible. It is highly undesirable to use abrasive devices - grinding wheels, sandpaper. They can cause more severe damage because they will leave abrasions and rough spots that will be more susceptible to corrosion. A safer option is special household chemicals.

What chemical can safely remove rust from a drum?

No special preparation of the washing machine is required before cleaning, but it should be noted that such liquids are very aggressive, so they must be applied carefully, exclusively to damaged areas and only to metal surfaces.

The advantages of acid converters are the elimination of damage to metals of any thickness, the ability to work with liquid at high and low temperatures. They are used to combat corrosion on car bodies, as well as any metal elements of household appliances.

The main active component of such products is phosphoric acid or hydroxycarboxylic acid. It is this that can destroy the corrosive coating and create an invisible film that prevents the reappearance of rust. To make the effect of use greater, it is recommended to apply the inhibitor to a dry surface. After the necessary time, the product should be washed off, otherwise prolonged exposure to acid will lead to additional damage to the metal.

The product should be applied locally; for this purpose, it is advisable to use a thin brush or small roller so that the inhibitor does not get on areas undamaged by corrosion. You should also take care of personal protection. Required:

• protective glasses;
• thick gloves.

It is advisable to carry out the treatment outdoors or in a room with good ventilation. Despite the inconvenience and danger of this method of fighting rust, it is the most effective, because dark spots disappear in a matter of seconds. Afterwards, all that remains is to wash off the remaining inhibitor with a cloth generously moistened with clean water.

If desired, you can try safer anti-corrosion products based on less aggressive components. They are also easy to use, but less toxic, since they contain zinc or tannin oxides instead of acid. They can be applied in any way, including spraying. Bonus - they will tint the damaged area black, so it will be easy to tell which spots have been treated and which still need treatment.
