Washing a denim jacket in the washing machine

Washing a denim jacket in the washing machineDenim is considered a universal outerwear; it goes harmoniously with different styles and is suitable for both hot and rainy weather. It is dense, durable and quite easy to care for - it is washed rarely and in a washing machine. But, being a natural fabric, it inevitably deteriorates if the cycle is not set up correctly. Before washing a denim jacket in an automatic washing machine, you need to know the rules for caring for denim and the manufacturer’s recommendations. Let's tell you everything in order.

Basic rules of care

Denim is a mixture of cotton and synthetics. Moreover, the cotton component is many times larger, so the care rules are appropriate. So, natural fibers shrink from hot water and lose their acquired pigment, the fabric shrinks by 1-2 sizes and becomes discolored. Hence the basic rule for caring for jeans: limit yourself to minimum or average temperature.

The optimal water temperature for denim is 30-40 degrees. As for the other conditions for washing a denim jacket, there are several:

  • if there are metal fittings, rivets, zippers and buttons, soak for no more than 1 hour;
  • for blue and blue jeans, use detergent for colored items;
  • give preference to hand washing;
  • do not try to wash denim on a washboard;
  • When washing in a machine, select a fast program (optimally 30 minutes);
  • When washing by hand, first rinse at 30 degrees and then in cold water;
  • dry naturally in a ventilated area or in the fresh air, but away from ultraviolet radiation and heaters.Don't soak a denim jacket for too long

Interestingly, in the past, denim clothes were washed without being removed in order to adjust the fabric to the figure and avoid excessive shrinkage. But now it has become clear that without high-temperature washing, denim is not in danger - if you do not overheat the fabric, then there will be no deformation. With soaking, everything is more complicated: prolonged exposure to water leads to the appearance of rust on metal fittings, which results in brown smudges and stains. It is better to limit the procedure and not soak the jeans for more than 30-120 minutes.

The optimal temperature for washing a denim jacket is 40 degrees.

You also need to take care of the color of the jacket. The use of conventional powders is undesirable, since it contains bleaching components that wash out the pigment. It is better to give preference to liquid detergents for colored and denim fabrics. It is also worth considering that the dye is applied to denim only on longitudinal or transverse threads, so the product is ironed only from the inside out. Otherwise, the iron will leave behind a discolored mark.

It is important to consider the composition of the denim jacket. It must be indicated by the manufacturer on a tag sewn to the item. Completely natural fabric does not stretch, it can only be washed by hand or in dry cleaning, however, such “clean” products are rare. More often, denim is supplemented with elastane, due to which the fabric acquires elasticity, the ability to stretch and withstand machine washing.

We take into account the manufacturer's recommendations

You cannot immediately load the jacket into the machine - before any manipulations, you must study the information on the label. It is on it that the manufacturer indicates the optimal conditions for washing and drying the product, encrypted in special icons. So, the following designations are often found on denim:

  • “Bowl with water and number” – water temperature during washing;
  • “Crossed out basin” – washing is contraindicated;
  • “Bin with hand down” – hand wash only;
  • “Triangle” – bleaching is allowed (crossed out, on the contrary, is prohibited);
  • “Empty circle or with a letter” – dry cleaning options;look at the label on the jacket
  • “Iron with dots” – ironing temperature;
  • “A square with a circle or stripes” is a method of spinning and drying.

Before washing your jacket, carefully read the label!

As a rule, an ordinary denim jacket can be washed in a machine, as evidenced by the absence of prohibitory icons. But the basin will be marked with the number “40”, which will indicate the recommended washing temperature. The triangle will be crossed out, prohibiting bleaching, and the circle with the letter “P” will indicate the permissibility of dry cleaning. Ironing will be allowed by the image of the iron, and two points will give the go-ahead to heat the sole up to 150 degrees. A square with vertical stripes will indicate the need to hang dry the denim.

Automatic wash

Most denim jackets can withstand machine washing. But it is better to reduce the risks to a minimum and carry out the cycle according to all the rules. To avoid mistakes, follow the instructions.

  1. We fasten all available buttons and locks.
  2. Turn the product inside out.
  3. Select the “Jeans” or “Delicate Wash” mode on the washing machine.
  4. We pour detergent into the main compartment of the tray, and conditioner into the central compartment.
  5. We adjust the water heating temperature (for light-colored items – 40 degrees, for black and colored items – 30).
  6. We check that the spin is switched to minimum.
  7. We turn on an additional rinse to completely rinse the detergent from the fibers.

Then we start the cycle and wait for the end of the program. Next, we proceed to drying, which we will discuss in more detail separately.

Wash by hand

Jeans fade a lot, so they are always washed separately. Since it is unprofitable to run the machine just for one thing, hand washing is a big help and helps save water and light consumption. Clean the jacket on your hands like this:

  • a basin or bathtub is filled with water at 30-40 degrees;
  • Color powder or gel dissolves in water;hand washing denim jacket
  • add conditioner or a tablespoon of acetic acid;
  • Contaminated areas are washed with a brush and soap (cleaners and stain removers are acceptable).

If the jacket has fur elements, then you need to be careful. Both natural and faux fur equally dislike water and detergents. It is better to unhook the edge before washing or cover it with polyethylene as much as possible.

Getting rid of moisture

The drying process depends on the washing performed. If the jacket was cleaned by hand, then you should not wring it out - just hold the item over a basin or put it in the bathroom, allowing the water to flow freely from the fabric. Afterwards, the denim is straightened out and hung on hangers. Jeans are drying in the shade on the balcony.

You cannot dry jeans on a radiator!

If you choose to machine wash, then before drying the jacket must be unbuttoned, turned inside out, and only then hung on hangers in the fresh air. The material is periodically straightened to avoid folds and creases. As for artificial drying, hair dryers and heaters are prohibited, as they dry out the fabric too much, leading to loss of elasticity and deformation. Direct ultraviolet radiation has a similar effect, making denim hard, faded and rough.
