What items should not be washed together in the washing machine?

Before loading laundry into the drum, it must be sorted. Some items cannot be washed together in a washing machine; some wardrobe items can be “mixed”. Let’s figure out how to properly divide clothes into “lots” so that your favorite items retain their original appearance longer.

What happens if you wash everything in a pile?

When a basket of laundry accumulates, it’s often just thrown into the machine. Next, select the most universal mode, for example, “Hand Wash” and start the cycle. In the best case, nothing unpleasant will happen - things will not lose their appearance. However, in the end, such an attitude towards clothing will still lead to sad consequences.

For example, washing without sorting can be fraught with:

• deformation of things. If you do not take into account what fabric the product is made from and choose the wrong mode, it can easily shrink or stretch;
• changing the color of the laundry. So, a white blouse washed with red tights will easily take on a pinkish tint, and a light blouse worn with black trousers will turn gray.

Do not wash items that do not meet their intended purpose together in the washing machine. For example, sneakers and bedding, jeans and bras. It is also important to select your own detergent for different types of fabric. It is forbidden to use powder with bleaching components on black laundry, and gel for bright colors on snow-white laundry.

Sorting before washing will help avoid deformation of items and preserve their original appearance and properties.

The label will be the housewife’s “assistant” in this matter. The manufacturer indicates on the label the basic recommendations for caring for the laundry. On the tag you can see whether automatic washing is allowed, whether the fabric is subject to shedding, what temperature conditions are acceptable, etc.

Is the new item subject to shedding?

Usually, manufacturer's labels sewn into the inside cause discomfort when worn, so people cut them off after purchasing the item. And then you can’t take it and read whether the material is fading. There are two ways to find the answer to this question.

Sometimes manufacturers sew a small piece of fabric into the inside of the garment. If you have a “sample”, cut it and moisten it with ammonia. Next, wait 10-20 minutes. Then rinse the flap and dry it. If the color has not changed, the material does not fade.

If there is no sewn-in piece of fabric, the check is performed in a different way. Wet a small area with water, place a white paper towel on top and iron the area. If the sheet is not colored, then the product does not fade.

Denim tends to fade even after several washes, so it should be washed separately from other laundry.

We sort things according to color

Sorting of linen is carried out not only by type of fabric, but also by color. Black is always washed separately from the rest. It is allowed to “dilute” the products with clothes in blue, brown, dark gray and purple shades. The same applies to white things. You can add linen in cream, pastel shades, light-colored items with small colored patterns. It is strictly forbidden to throw bright and dark clothes with them.

As for bright materials, there are separate rules for them. Washing must be done using detergents for colored clothes.You can also add light-colored items with large-scale patterns or designs here.

There is no need to sort things by shade. For example, it’s quite possible to wear a hot pink and a red skirt together. You should be careful with clothes that are prone to shedding - it is better to wash them separately. Experts do not recommend washing together:

• white and dark;
• colored and white;
• black and color.

Completely different detergents and automatic machine programs are designed for washing white and black items. For light-colored clothes, bleaches are used, which are unacceptable for dark fabrics. By combining these shades, it is easy to lose the appearance of wardrobe items.

Black items can be washed at low temperatures. A small degree will not be enough to fully care for white linen. In addition, dark fabric almost always fades - so light materials take on a grayish tint.

As for colored and white, they also have completely different detergents and modes. For bright colors, it is recommended to heat the water to a temperature of 30-40 degrees, for light colors – from 60°C. The combination of such clothes will not bring anything good - general wash quality will decrease.

Although the temperature conditions for washing black and colored clothes are the same, it is not recommended to throw them into the machine together. Since different household chemicals should be used. The exception would be bright clothes, as close as possible to dark shades.

Sorting by fabric type

It is very important to sort items according to the type of fabric used for sewing. Depending on the material, recommendations for choosing a detergent, the degree of water heating, and the preferred washing program will vary. Some items can be thrown into the drum together, others must be loaded separately or even washed by hand.

Allowed to be washed together:

• cotton, linen and chintz clothing;
• wool and cashmere products;
• synthetic and semi-synthetic materials.

There are products that cannot be combined with any fabrics and can only be washed separately. These are fleece, artificial and natural silk, lace. It is advisable not to throw such demanding fabrics into the machine, but to wash them by hand.

If you don’t pay enough attention to sorting and throw cotton and wool items together, you shouldn’t expect anything good. Wool will shrink under the influence of hot water, and spinning, even at low speeds, can irrevocably damage the item. This is why it is so important to divide laundry into batches depending on the type of fabric.
