Checking the performance of the shock absorbers of the washing machine

How to repair the shock absorber of an LG washing machineIt is not difficult to notice that an automatic car has problems with shock absorbers. The washing machine, when operating at high speeds, will rattle, shake and “run” around the room. Therefore, if after each wash you find a “home assistant” at some distance from the place where it was installed, it is better not to hesitate in making a diagnosis.

If you do not check the shock absorbers on your washing machine in time and do not change them, this will lead to more serious problems. For example, due to constant shaking, the tank of the machine may crack. We'll tell you how to test dampers.

How can you tell if a shock absorber is broken?

There is no need to immediately run to the store for new shock absorbers. First you need to check the functionality of the old parts. To inspect the dampers, you will have to partially disassemble the body of the machine, since they are installed from below, under the washing machine’s tank. The algorithm of actions will vary depending on the SMA model.

On many washing machine models, for example from Bosch, it is enough to remove the front wall of the case. On such machines, the shock absorbers are attached from below to the bottom of the machine with a bolt, and from above - to the tank with a latch. To get the dampers, you will need:

  • turn off the power to the washing machine;Before checking, be sure to turn off the power to the machine
  • close the shut-off valve;shut off the water supply
  • disconnect the machine from communications;
  • Unscrew the bolts holding the front panel of the case;
  • remove the front wall so that it is not in the way;remove the front and back walls
  • prepare a long drill of the required diameter (usually 13 mm);
  • drill out the bolt securing the shock absorber from below;remove the shock absorber mount
  • deal with the latch with which the stand clings to the tank.

After this, you can remove the shock absorber from the housing.On other automatic machines, for example, LG, there is no need to disassemble the washing machine at all. You can access the dampers on them through the bottom. The algorithm of actions will be as follows:

  • turn off the power to the machine, disconnect it from the water supply and sewerage;
  • cover the floor with a blanket;It’s better to get to the pipe through the bottom
  • Place the washer on the left side (not on the right side, otherwise you can flood the control board with water from the powder receptacle);
  • press out the plastic clips on both ends of the shock absorber.

If the damper fastenings do not lend themselves, treat them with a special WD-40 liquid and try again after 10-15 minutes.

The type of shock absorber mounting itself also depends on the brand and model. So, on Samsung, AEG and Mile washing machines, M8 and M10 bolts are used to fix the dampers. To unscrew them, you will need socket wrenches of the appropriate sizes. On ElG and Whirlpool machines, the racks are held in place with plastic latches, which are easy to handle with your own hands, without special tools.

Dismantling of shock-absorbing elements must be done carefully so as not to damage the fastenings. Do not press hard on the latches or use “heavy” or sharp tools. It is necessary to monitor not only the clamps, but also the safety of the tank, nearby wires and pipes, as well as the integrity of the racks themselves.

Each shock absorber should be checked for serviceability. This is done like this:

  • press the rod;
  • try to pull the rod out of the rack;
  • evaluate the resistance that the element provides.

When the rod “moves” freely inside the strut, it’s time to change the shock absorbers. Such dampers are no longer able to fully dampen machine vibrations. For individual parts, you also need to check whether there is lubricant in the piston. The absence of a substance will indicate wear of the element.Another unpleasant sign is rust on the body.

Can the shock absorber be repaired?

Having identified that the shock absorbers are faulty, the question arises of what to do next. Should I buy new ones or try to repair old racks? Dampers can be repaired if the following damage occurs:

  • the liner or sealing gasket is worn out;
  • The shock absorber mounting bolts are worn out.

However, not in all cases the part can be repaired. If this is a factory defect of the strut, or its mechanical damage, then the dampers will have to be changed. Experts do not recommend using an automatic car until problems with shock absorbers are eliminated.

So, having pulled the shock absorbers out of the body, first check the stroke of the rod. If it compresses and unclenches freely, then replacement will be necessary. Such a damper cannot be repaired.How are shock-absorbing elements arranged?

A shock absorber whose rod moves with force is quite functional. You need to check the element further:

  • pull out the damper insert;
  • If the rod moves easily without the insert, replace the gasket.

Buying such a small part will be problematic; it is much easier to make a new gasket with your own hands. Take a belt about 3 mm thick. Cut a piece out of it that matches the shape and size of the removed sealing gum.Bosch washing machine shock absorber repair

A homemade gasket is installed in the shock absorber. It needs to be lubricated first. Then you can put the rod and insert back in place.

If mechanical defects are noticeable on the shock absorber (caused by natural wear, factory defects, etc.), then there is only one way out - buy and install new dampers. You should select components based on the markings of old parts. It is unacceptable to purchase stands at random.

Therefore, when going to the store, take the dismantled shock absorbers with you.This will ensure that you buy racks that are perfect for your washing machine. Installation of dampers is carried out similarly, in reverse order.
